Traction, support and unique style
The first Vans store was opened in 1966 by brothers Paul Van Doren and James Van Doren, along with Gordon C. Lee and Serge D’Elia. Originally named the Van Doren Rubber Company, their unique business model allowed them to manufacture shoes on site and sell them directly to the public. The Van Doren Rubber Company sold 12 pairs of Vans shoes on their first day of trade, which were made the very same day and ready for afternoon pick-up. Talk about innovation! Today, Vans has blossomed into a globally-recognised brand with stand alone stores and stockists all over the world.
Timeless design and innovation
In the 1970s, skaters were seen sporting Vans shoes all over Southern California, favouring their grip, supportive ankle cushioning and unique colours. From Vans Old Skool shoes – the original classic side stripe skate shoe - to Vans Era shoes– the first low top lace-up skate shoe with a padded collar – many of Vans’ original styles remain popular to this day. The Vans Sk8-Hi was introduced in 1978, a legendary high-top style which shielded skateboarders’ ankles from injury. The Vans Slip-On shoe garnered worldwide attention when actor Sean Penn wore a pair of black and white Checkerboards in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And the rest, as they say, is history!
